CSB Budget

Chemical Safety Board has requested an annual budget of $10,600,000 from the alloted $9,263000 now given.

CSB Board Member William E. Wright stated "The new funds will allow the Chemical Safety Board to respond to more of the serious chemical accidents that occur in the U.S. each year. Currently, the CSB lacks enough staff to investigate more than a fraction of those accidents. In addition, we need a stable funding line for safety videos in order to continue this successful and innovative program that is helping inform businesses around the world."

The increase will provide support of personnel increases, fully funding positions of three investigative positions, a new knowledge manager position, cost of living increase and other adjustments to the agency’s payroll and expenses. In addition to personnel increases, CSB's safety video program, fixed cost increases, accounting, procurement, and travel.

This year alone the CSB has completed 7 comprehensive investigations.
July 31, 2007 Synthron Chemical Explosion, Morganton, NC
June 12, 2007 Partridge Raleigh Oilfield Explosion and Fire, Raleigh, MS
April 10, 2007 Universal Form Clamp Co. Explosion and Fire, Bellwood, IL
March 20, 2007 BP America Refinery Explosion, Texas City, TX
March 13, 2007 Bethune Point Wastewater Plant Explosion, Daytona Beach, FL
March 6, 2007 Formosa Plastics Vinyl Chloride Explosion, Illiopolis, IL
February 28, 2007 DPC Enterprises Chlorine Release, Glendale, AZ

The CSB is currently working on 5 investigations left over from 2007.
December 19, 2007 T2 Laboratories Inc. Explosion and Fire, Jacksonville, FL
October 2, 2007 Xcel Energy Company Fire, Georgetown, CO
July 17, 2007 Barton Solvents Explosions and Fire, Valley Center, KS
February 16, 2007 Valero Refinery Propane Fire, Sunray, TX
January 30, 2007 Little General Store Propane Explosion, Ghent, WV

Being a family member who has dealt with the CSB there is no other as deserving. I have found no other origination who puts as much time and effort into not only determining the cause of an incident but in prevention strategies.
