Abilene police officer killed in traffic crash

April 30, Abilene, Texas — Funeral is scheduled for Monday for an Abilene police officer who died when his motorcycle slammed into a car. According to police reports, Officer Rodney Holder was pursuing a speeder on his police motorcycle near the McMurry University campus about noon Thursday when a car turned in front of him. The motorcycle slammed into the car, then tumbled for about 30 yards before hitting a tree. The 50-year-old police officer landed under a parked van.


Lexington Police Officer Injured in Hit and Run

April 29, Lexington, Kentucky - A Lexington police officer was hit by a vehicle Thursday night. It happened near the intersection of Limestone and Alabama, sometime around 10 p.m. Lexington police tell ABC 36 the officer was taken to UK Hospital. Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts tells ABC 36 News, Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Bastin will hold a news conference early Friday morning. So far, the officer's name, and the circumstances surrounding the crash, are unknown. It's also not clear if any arrests have been made.


2 Workers Are Killed in Kentucky Mine Collapse

April 29, Providence, Kentucky — Two miners were killed when a roof collapsed in a coal mine with a long history of safety problems. Gov. Steven L. Beshear identified the miners as Justin Travis, 27, and Michael Carter, 28. The collapse happened late Wednesday at the Dotiki Mine near Providence, in western Kentucky. Carl Boone, district supervisor for the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration, said the investigation into the collapse would begin as soon as the mine was deemed safe to enter.


Worker dies in house renovation project

April 29, Charlotte, North Carolina - Federal officials are investigating the death earlier this week of a man working on a house renovation project in Charlotte's Eastover neighborhood. Police say Christopher Brent Belk, 39, of Charlotte, was killed when he fell from the roof of a two-story house in the 600 block of Cherokee Place. The incident happened about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. The house was under renovation, and authorities say investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are looking into the incident. Such investigations are customary in workplace fatalities.


Man found dead after fire at Phoenix business

April 26, Phoenix, Arizona - Firefighters found the body of a slain man while fighting a blaze in a Phoenix industrial business Thursday morning, officials said. The victim, 64-year-old employee Angel Morales, was responsible for opening up the building-materials business in the morning, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department. The fire alarm went off about 5 a.m., and crews arrived at the building near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road to find water coming out of it and signs of forced entry, Thompson said.


Man killed in trench collapse identified

April 29, Salem Township, Pennsylvania - The scene at a trench collapse that killed one man and injured a second on Thursday morning. The man who died today in a trench collapse in Salem Township has been identified as James Berry, 35, of Berwick. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning, Luzerne County Coroner John Corcoran said. Berry was trapped when the seven-feet deep trench collapsed around 8:45 a.m. off Route 11. His body was finally extricated around 2:30 p.m., Corcoran said.


Subway worker dies in third rail accident

April 26, New York City, New York - A subway worker from East Rockaway working on rain-slicked tracks died Monday when he touched the high-voltage third rail, according to MTA officials. James Knell, a veteran MTA New York City Transit supervisor, was on elevated tracks at the Beach 90th Street Station in Rockaway at about 4:30 a.m. when he was electrocuted, according to MTA officials. Family mourns railroad conductor killed in yard accident

April 24, Chicago, Illinois - Melinda Carter lit up her mother's eyes recently when she talked about plans to buy a home in the southwest suburbs. But the bigger surprise was that Carter wanted her parents to sell their home in a rough Far South Side neighborhood and come live with her. "She said, ‘You're going to come move with me, you and daddy.' And that's what she always wanted ... to take care of her family," said her mother, Delois Carter. But on Saturday, family and friends gathered to mourn Melinda Carter's death. The 36-year-old train yard conductor for CSX Corp. was killed Friday night when she was tossed from a locomotive and struck by it. Carter was conducting routine switching operations while cars were being moved to prepare them for delivery, officials said. The accident occurred on the company's grounds near 134th Street and Ashland Avenue in Riverdale and an investigation is ongoing, a CSX spokesman said.


Explosion in Montcalm County leaves worker dead

April 23, Crystal Township, Michigan - A worker died in an explosion at a sewage treatment facility in Michigan's central Lower Peninsula. The Montcalm County Sheriff's Department says the 10 a.m. Friday explosion happened while Dan Eller was using a cutting torch on an oil barrel. Investigators say a spark may have set off the blast, which could be heard from a quarter-mile away. Authorities tell The Grand Rapids Press and Grand Rapids television station WOOD that Eller suffered first- and second-degree burns over 60 percent of his body. He died after being airlifted to Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids.


Road worker from Ellwood City killed in slip from grader

April 23, Ellwood City, Pennsylvania - PennDOT worker was killed yesterday when he slipped from a road grader and fell underneath its tires at a job site in Lawrence County. The death of Richard Bentel, 42, of Ellwood City, has been ruled an accident, Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Richard Johnson said. Bentel was on a crew doing shoulder work along Route 551, about 10 miles northwest of New Castle, when the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m., Pulaski Township police said.


Wrecker worker dies in Eastland

April 21, A Ranger wrecker employee was killed Wednesday in an Eastland County accident. Adam Diaz Lopez, Jr., 46 was picking up a rental truck that had previously crashed when the driver of a 2008 Ford F-250 traveled off the road to the left and struck the rental truck. The Ford then struck Lopez. The crash occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Interstate 20, about 10 miles east of Ranger. According to Senior Trooper Sparky Dean, Lopez was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and was pronounced dead at 5:01 a.m. His body was taken to Edward’s Funeral Home in Ranger.


Douglas County construction worker crushed to death

April 21, A Douglas County construction worker was killed Wednesday afternoon when equipment malfunctioned at a baseball stadium, authorities said. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m., near North Douglas Elementary School and the intersection of Cedar Mountain Road and South Flat Rock Road, Douglas County officials said. A worker operating a skid steer loader (a small tractor commonly known as a "Bobcat") apparently climbed out the front of the caged driver's seat to make some adjustment to the machine or remove some debris and caused the raised shovel arm to drop, pinning his head to the steel cage, Douglas County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. James Harrell told the AJC.


Construction worker killed in work site acccident

April 21, Rocky Mount, Colorado - A construction worker was killed Tuesday after falling to his death during an on-site accident, Rocky Mount police said. Authorities reported that the victim, Dereick Hartsoe, 28, was operating a boom crane at a work site at the intersection of Canopy Drive and Fenner Road. The crane broke, causing Hartsoe to fall at least 15 feet to the ground. Hartsoe was found dead around 9:45 a.m. Police said he suffered internal injuries and severe lacerations. The Crumpler resident was employed by Pike Electric in Mount Airy.


NH Farmer Dies Beneath Overturned Tractor

April 19, Monroe, New Hampshire ― New Hampshire State Police say a 62-year-old farmer was killed when he was accidentally pinned under a tractor on his property in Monroe. According to police, Howard Ward and another person had been trying to cut down a large pine tree Monday afternoon. Ward was using the tractor to push on the tree and guide it down. Police say that as the tree started to fall, the front of the tractor became entwined with the tree. The tractor rolled over and Ward was pinned beneath it. Rescuers pronounced him dead at the scene.


Man identified in fatal Westmont Midas explosion

April 19, Westmont, Illinois — Westmont police and fire officials said an employee of a Westmont car repair shop was welding some barrels outside the property when a fatal explosion occurred Monday, April 19. Police said William R. Zuponeck, 28, of Glendale Heights, an employee at Midas Auto Service, 401 W. Ogden Ave., was killed in the explosion. The accident happened in the back of the property when the man was working, police said.


Worker killed in Port Arthur refinery accident

April 19, Port Arthur, Texas — An industrial accident at the Motiva (moh-TEE'-vuh) Enterprises LLC refinery in Port Arthur has claimed one life. Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam told KFDM-TV that a contract worker died in the accident Monday morning. The plant is the site of a $7 billion expansion project to double capacity to nearly 600,000 barrels a day.


Civilian worker killed in crash at Camp Pendleton

April 20, San Diego, California - Friends and family of a 48-year-old civilian fatally injured in a wreck at Camp Pendleton were mourning his death Monday. Jose Gaspar Ajca of Fallbrook was injured in a crash in the 400 block of Ammunition Road about 7:30 a.m. Sunday and died at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido about an hour later, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. Ajca worked at the Marine base.


Cab Driver Fatally Shot, Abandoned by Passengers in Crossfire

April 19, Dallas, Texas - A 30-year-old taxi driver was fatally shot and dumped on the ground after an altercation between his passengers and another driver. Police say Bashir R. Abraham picked up two passengers who had been in disturbance at the XTC Cabaret off Interstate 35E in northwest Dallas. Officers say an unknown gunman pulled up to the taxi at Regal Row and Stemmons Freeway around 5 a.m. and fired into the cab. Abraham and both passengers were shot.

Tree trimmer dies in Mesa when trapped under palm fronds

April 18, Mesa, Arizona - Authorities say a worker trimming a palm tree in Mesa Saturday morning was killed when a pile of fronds fell on him trapping him underneath. Mesa Fire Department spokesman Doug Martineau said two men were trimming the tree around 8:15 a.m. when the 28-year-old worker was trapped under 500 to 1,000 pounds of dead foliage. Martineau said when firefighters arrived at the home near Brown Road and Country Club Drive, they could only see the man's hands showing from under the skirt of tree fronds.


AT&T Worker Dies After ‘Loud Boom’

April 16, Phoenix, Arizona - A man only heard what he described as a “loud boom.” When he looked up, he saw that his co-worker, an AT&T technician, was hanging motionless. It happened Thursday on Detroit’s west side. The worker, in his 40s, was high above the ground working on a utility pole. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. There’s no official cause of death yet, but a DTE Energy spokesperson says it’s most likely electrocution. DTE and AT&T both used the utility pole to provide service in the area. Michigan’s OSHA will likely investigate further.


Worker Killed, Two Hurt in Choctaw County

April 16, Choctaw County, Alabama - An accident Thursday in west Alabama killed a Choctaw County employee and critically injured another. It happened around 10 a.m. on County Road 32 in Yantley. Officials say three employees were preparing to patch a pothole when an elderly motorist struck the back of their dump truck, pinning them underneath...The worker who died is identified as 63-year-old Jerry Hudson. After working more than 20 years for the county, he retired three years ago and Commissioner Ruffin says he went on to work part-time with the county to help. One of the workers sustained non-life threatening injuries. The other was critically hurt and is being treated for multiple injuries, including two broken legs.


Man killed in forklift accident at NY business

April 16, Gates, New York - Authorities say a 27-year-old man has died after he was crushed between a forklift and his pickup truck at a suburban Rochester business. Police say Thomas Albano of Ogden was working on his truck at Clark Moving and Storage Thursday evening when the accident occurred. Officials say he had permission to use the forklift while working on his truck. Police say Albano was dead by the time authorities were called to the scene.


Worker crushed to death in coiler

April 15, Alpharetta, Georgia - A 53-year-old worker was killed when he was pulled into steel processing equipment at AP Specialty Metals Inc.'s plant in Alpharetta, Ga. A spokesman for the Forsyth County (Ga.) Fire Department said the victim, Jeffrey E. Thurman, was working on a machine that rolled 6-foot-wide coiled steel for shipment. "For reasons unknown, he became caught...


Garage worker crushed to death by dump truck in in Roslyn Heights

April 14, Roslyn Heights, New York - A man was crushed to death Thursday by the mechanism of a dump truck that was inside an auto repair business in Roslyn Heights, police said. The victim was pronounced dead at the Roslyn Auto Express, 71 Mineola Ave., shortly after 3 p.m., when he was discovered, Nassau police said. Homicide Det. Sgt. Richard Laursen said the victim was working there alone, and the exact time of the accident...


ComEd employee found dead

April 14, Bedford, Illinois - A ComEd worker was found dead Wednesday at a power substation near Bedford Park, officials said. A ComEd spokesman says the deceased worker was discovered by another ComEd employee this afternoon. The identity of the worker has not yet been released, pending notification of family members, he said. The circumstances leading to the death were not immediately available, and ComEd officials will continue to investigate, he said.


Tesoro Says Sixth Anacortes Refinery Worker Dies

April 13, Seattle, Washington - Tesoro Corp. said a sixth refinery worker, Lew Janz, died from injuries sustained in the April 2 chemical explosion at its Anacortes, Washington, refinery. “It is with the deepest sadness that we must report the loss of our friend and co-worker, Lew Janz, who passed away this morning,” Lynn Westfall, a company spokesman, said in an e- mailed statement today. Another worker who was injured in the blast is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.


Metals Plant Worker Crushed By Machine ID'd

April 14, Forsyth County, Georgia - A manufacturing plant worker killed Tuesday in an industrial accident has been identified. Capt. Frank Huggins with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the victim is Jeffrey Thurman, 53, of Cumming. Authorities said Thurman became trapped in a machine that polishes heavy-gauge metal. The accident happened at the AP Specialty Metals plant on Grassland Parkway in Alpharetta.


South Carolina man identified as victim in Hanover industrial accident

April 13, Baltimore, Maryland - Anne Arundel County police have identified the man who was killed Monday morning when slabs of granite fell on top of him at a Hanover countertop company. Police said Stacy Carl Moody, 41, of Turbeville, S.C., a trucker for South Carolina-based McKenzie Trucking, was delivering slabs of granite to American Countertop. As he prepared to unload the slabs about 9:15 a.m., they slid from his flatbed truck, killing him, according to police.


Construction worker dies after falling 4 stories from Seaside Heights hotel

April 12, Seaside Heights - A 43-year-old Toms River man fell to his death this morning while working on a hotel in Seaside Heights. The construction worker fell four stories from the White Pearl Hotel on Sumner Avenue at 9:11 a.m., said Capt. Thomas Hayes, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Hayes said the man, whose identity is being withheld by authorities until next of kin is notified, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:25 a.m.


Construction Worker Killed At Local Mine

April 12, Franklin County, Illinois - A construction worker has been killed in an accident at Sugar Camp Mine in Franklin County. Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says Ray Oney, 61 of Mount Airy, North Carolina was killed Sunday afternoon while working for an independent construction company at the site of the mine. Leffler says Oney died from lacerations to his heart and lungs.


Elephant startled by shock kills Pa. circus worker

April 10, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania — Authorities say a circus elephant that kicked a worker and killed him before a performance in northeastern Pennsylvania was shocked by an electrical wire. Wilkes-Barre (WILKS'-behr-ee) Sgt. Ken Lukasavage says the Irem Shrine Circus groomer was trying to get the animal away from the wire when he was injured shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday. The circus wasn't open at the time. Lukasavage says after the accident, the African elephant, Dumbo, was calm and responded to a trainer's commands. Police say the elephant was confined and did not participate in Friday night's performance.


Cab Driver Murderer Identified

April 10, New Orleans, Louisiana - Members of the New Orleans Police Department have issued an arrest warrant for 21-year-old John Raymond wanted in connection with the murder of a cab driver that occurred April 5 at around midnight in the 3000 block of Sandra Drive. According to investigators, Fourth District officers responded to a call of "Shots fired" and upon their arrival, found the victim lying on the street suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. Emergency Medical Paramedics were summoned to the scene where the victim was pronounced dead. John Gagliano, the New Orleans coroner's office chief investigator, says 39-year-old Richard Temple Jr. was sitting in his taxi early Tuesday when someone shot him in the chest. No motive has been released in the shooting.


Washington State: 5 workers killed in refinery explosion

April 7, Anacortes, Washington — Five workers were killed and two severely burned from a fire and explosion here at the Tesoro oil refinery April 2. According to the Seattle Times, the early morning explosion “was so violent that many in Anacortes felt the shock wave across Fidalgo Bay… . A fireball lit the night sky over the plant.” Six of the seven victims were members of the United Steelworkers, Local 12-591. Those killed were: Matthew Bowen, 31; Darren Hoines, 43; Daniel Aldridge, 50; Kathryn Powell, 29; and Donna Van Dreumel, 36. Matt Gumbel, 34, and Lew Janz, a supervisor, are in critical condition. The explosion occurred in the naphtha unit. Naphtha is a volatile, flammable liquid derived during the refining process.


Austintown man killed in construction accident outside Cleveland

April 7, Hudson, Ohio - An Austintown man is dead after a trench collapsed at a construction site in Hudson Wednesday morning. James Wetzl, 56, an employee of A. Bagnoli and Sons Grading and Excavating out of Boardman, was killed when a wall of mud and clay collapsed on top of the area he was working at around 11 a.m. Another man, Albert Bagnoli, Jr. of Youngstown, was trapped under ten feet of mud. Crews worked for seven hours to rescue him.


One worker dies, one survives in Hudson trench collapse

April 7, Hudson, Ohio - One worker died and another was pulled to safety after enduring 5 1/2 hours in a sewer trench that collapsed around them Wednesday. At times, rescuers clawed at the sticky clay that filled the ditch in an effort to free the men. Eventually, they used a body board and pulley to hoist the survivor, Albert Joseph Bagnoli, Jr., 58, of Youngstown, from the bottom of the 15-foot hole about 4:45 p.m. Bagnoli was smiling. Workers had already put a neck brace on him. Rescuers were unable to save James Wetzl, 56, of Canfield, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Construction worker killed in I-95 crash

April 7, Orange, Connecticut — A construction worker who died in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 has been identified as a 56-year-old Farmington man. Connecticut State Police say Anthony Diorio, who worked for ADF Industries of Berlin, was killed in the crash early Wednesday in Orange. Police say the boom arm on Diorio's truck was raised too high and struck an overpass, causing the vehicle to leave its lane and into the path of a big rig. That tractor-trailer hit the construction truck and Diorio, who was thrown from his vehicle.


Bremerton man killed in fall from tree

April 6, A tree-trimmer fatally injured in a fall while limbing a tree in the Poulsbo was identified Tuesday as Michael S. Pitcher, 30, of Bremerton. Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom said Pitcher was the owner of Allstar Tree & Landscape of Bremerton. He was dead at the scene in 13000 block of Keyport Road Northeast following a fall shortly before 5 p.m. Monday According to Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, aid was summoned by a co-worker after Pitcher fell about 35 feet from a tree in which he was working. He was wearing a helmet, but landed on his head on a fallen tree. The state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating.


Cab driver killed in Algiers was friend to all say co-workers

April 6, New Orleans – A 39-year-old cab driver who had just picked up a fare and delivered her to an Algiers neighborhood when an armed man approached him and shot him during a robbery shortly after midnight. Ricky Temple, who worked for Glenn’s Cab Company had picked up the fare in Harvey and brought her near the intersection of General DeGaulle and Sandra Drive, where the crime occurred. Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo said the NOPD is narrowing in on a suspect based on accounts of the woman in the cab and several people who live in the neighborhood.


25 Dead in W.Va. Mine Blast, Worst Since 1984

April 6, Montcoal, West Virgina - A huge underground explosion blamed on methane gas killed 25 coal miners in the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1984, and rescuers on Tuesday began a dangerous and possibly futile attempt to rescue four others still missing...''They're supposed to be a big company,'' said Michelle McKinney, who found out from a local official at a nearby school that her 62-year-old father, Benny R. Willingham, died in the blast. ''These guys, they took a chance every day to work and make them big. And they couldn't even call us.'' McKinney said her husband is a miner too and her 16-year-old son doesn't want him to go back to work. Willingham, who had mined for 30 years, the last 17 with Massey, was just five weeks from retiring and planned to take his wife on a cruise to the Virgin Islands next month. Three members of the same family were also among the dead. Diana Davis said her husband, Timmy Davis, 51, died in the explosion along with his nephews, Josh Napper, 27, and Cory Davis, 20.


USA - Farmer shot dead

April 5, Flagstaff, Arizona - Fears of Mexico's drug war spilling across the border took on an all new urgency this weekend after a 58-year-old rancher from the border town of Douglas, Arizona was fatally shot. Rob Krentz's body was found just before midnight Saturday on his family's ranch. Krentz's dog had also been shot to death. The Cochise County Sheriff's Department says details remain sketchy at this point, but the U.S. Border Patrol has joined the investigation. U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona released a statement condemning the "cold-blooded killing."


Montgomery County police officer dies in police car wreck

April 5, Montgomery County, Maryland - A Montgomery County police officer whose wife is pregnant with triplets was killed Sunday when his police car ran off the road and struck a tree in Wheaton, officers said Sunday night.Hector Ayala, 31, was responding to a call from another officer who needed assistance at the scene of a fight, a department spokesman said. Ayala was driving west on Randolph Road about 2:20 a.m. when his 2003 Ford Crown Victoria left the road and slammed into a tree.

Walter Wetzel Chased After Suspect On Saw Mill Run Boulevard

April 3, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - A convenience store employee hit by a getaway car during an alleged robbery in Duquesne Heights has died after months in and out of the hospital. Frank Pekular is accused of running over 61-year-old Walter Wetzel after an attempted robbery at the BP gas station at 910 Saw Mill Run Blvd. on Nov. 28, police said.


Five dead in Anacortes refinery explosion and fire

April 2, Anacortes, Washington — The two major March Point oil refineries whose puffing towers sit across a narrow bay from downtown Anacortes are an intimate part of this community — the source of year-round paychecks, even in a troubled economy. But workers and their loved ones know that with those jobs comes risk...Tesoro workers who died at the scene were Daniel J. Aldridge, 50, of Anacortes; Matthew C. Bowen, 31, of Arlington; and Darrin J. Hoines, 43, of Ferndale. Skagit County deputy coroner Bob Clark said each man was married.


Central Iowa Worker Dies When Wall Collapses

April 2, Blairsburg, Iowa - Hamilton County sheriff's officials say a 57-year-old Clarion man has died after a cement block wall at a school construction site in Blairsburg fell on top of him. Hamilton County Sheriff Dennis Hagenson says construction worker David Thompson was killed at about noon Friday while he worked on an addition to the Northeast Hamilton Elementary School. The wall was 18 feet tall and at least 12 feet wide.


Convenience store employee dead in College Station

April 2, College Station, Texas - Authorities are searching for two men after the death a convenience store employee during a robbery Friday morning. Police responded to a convenience store at the 1800 block of Harvey Mitchell Parkway just after 4 a.m. where they found an employee, Johannes Kinny, 39, with injuries after an altercation. The victim was taken to the College Station Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:44 a.m.


Men killed in Lawrence industrial accident are identified

April 2, Kansas City, Missouri - Authorities on Friday revealed the names of two men killed Thursday in an industrial accident in Lawrence. Those who died are Roy Hillebert, 56, of Eudora and Brandon Price, 26, of Lawrence. A third man was treated and released from a hospital. The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. at the MagnaGro International plant on the east side of Lawrence in a small industrial park. April 1, San Diego, California — Hours before he was fatally struck by a car while setting up flares around a highway traffic accident, emergency medical technician Esteban Bahena made this post to his Facebook account: “Just transported a patient coming off a jet plane. Love my job.” Bahena, 24, died about 8:30 a.m. Thursday after getting hit on state Route 163 south of Washington Street.


2 killed, 1 wounded in auto repair shop shooting

March 31, Detroit, Two people were fatally shot and one wounded at an auto repair shop on Detroit’s east side Tuesday afternoon following a dispute between the owners and a customer, Detroit police said...The gunman left the shop and returned a short time later while the two owners and employee were inside working. He fired several rounds at them, killing the owners. The employee was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police have not released the names and ages of the victims.


Worker Dies After Accident At Work

March 31, Des Moines, Iowa - A Des Moines worker died after suffering injuries on the job on Monday. The incident happened at the Anderson Erickson Dairy plant at 2420 East University Avenue. An Anderson Erickson spokesperson said the employee was injured in some type of occupational accident. The Polk County Medical Examiner's office said Christopher Gehringer, 45, died from traumatic asphyxiation. Gehringer's family took him off life support on Tuesday.


Monroe man killed in industrial accident

March 31, Monroe, Louisiana - A Monroe man was killed shortly after noon on Tuesday in an industrial accident in Monroe. Monroe Fire Department Chief Investigator David Hill confirmed that a 56-year-old man died when a "stand-up type" forklift, which was being unloaded, fell on him. The victim was pinned underneath and had to be extricated by the fire department, The accident happened at Harrison and Collier Streets at the old Ramsey's Trailways Bus Station. The victim, Isaac Luffey, owner and operator of ArkLa Recycling in West Monroe, was transported to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.


Iowa man dies in tractor accident

March 30, Bellevue, Iowa - A 62-year-old man from eastern Iowa has died after authorities say a tractor and manure spreader that he was operating apparently rolled down a hill and overturned, striking him. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that Wayne Keiffer of rural Bellevue died Monday. Authorities say a co-worker found Keiffer's body. The co-worker was checking on Keiffer when he didn't come to work. Jackson County sheriff's officials say the investigation into the farm accident continues.


Worker killed in Port Angeles conveyor accident

Port Angeles, Washington - The state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating the death of a worker at the Evergreen Fibre wood chip company in Port Angeles. Police says 38-year-old Timothy Eric Williams was working on a conveyor belt when it turned on unexpectedly. Police Chief Terry Gallagher told The Peninsula Daily News it appears to be an accident.


Crash kills two tree-trimming workers

March 29, Lexington, Kentucky - Four people have died in Pike County, alone, in the last three days. The latest accident happened Monday morning at the intersection of U.S. 460 and highway 1499 in the Mouthcard area when two people were hit and killed by a truck. The two workers were placing work signs along the road to warn motorists of tree trimming when the collision occurred. The two killed in the accident were Kevin D. Jones 32 years old of 50 Turnaround Lane, Dorton, KY. and Paul Williamson 20 years old of 1023 Morgan Fork, Harold, KY.


One Dead, One Injured at NY Salt Mine

March 29, New York, New York - An accident at The Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing has killed one man and injured another, WBNG.com reports. The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Salt is stored in a large bin as it awaits loading into trucks. One such bin collapsed onto a privately owned dump truck, killing the driver. A Cargill employee, who was operating the bin from position on it, fell and sustained injuries when the bin collapsed.


Waycross cab driver slain during botched robbery

March 29, Jacksonville, Florida - Waycross police are investigating the shooting death of a 55-year-old cab driver during a botched robbery early Sunday. Eldridge Thomas Jr. died after being shot in the upper body in the Bailey Heights neighborhood of the city, authorities said. Police found him in the 1300 block of Walter Street shortly after 5 a.m. when they responded to a report of a shooting near Charlton and Walter streets, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said. Thomas died at the scene. An autopsy will be performed this morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah, said Ware County Deputy Coroner Terry Anderson.
