The Weekly Toll: Death in the American Workplace

Our hearts go out to the families of the workers who died on the job.  Following are names of those who were not previously known to us.  We are here if you need us.

February 20, 2013 - Brunswick, MD - 39 year old Brian Snoots died on the job when an industrial sized tire he was inflating exploded.  He was employed by Brunswick Auto Repair. 

February 21 - Edinburg, TX - 21 year old Oscar Arellano died on the job from asphyxiation while working for Azteca Milling.  He was buried approximately 15 feet under corn grain inside a silo.  The company did not have confined space permits, allowing them to have anyone work inside the silo. 

February 22 - Woodbridge, NJ - 43 year old William Convey III of South Bound Brook, NJ was killed on the job when he was struck by a motorist as he stood at the back of his Fed Ex delivery truck, pinning him between the two vehicles. 

February 23 - Lincolnton, NC - 35 year old Marendonio Francisco Viruel Lopez died of traumatic injuries when he became caught in an angular saw while working at a cabinet making plant.  He was employed by RSI Home Product at plant #2.  

February 24 - Geismer, LA - 52 year old Nolan Cormier was killed on the job when he became entangled in a conveyor belt.  He was working for Impala Burnside Terminal plant. 

February 25 - Carrollton, OH - 28 year old Abdal L. Audeh of Dover was killed on the job when he fell backwards on an oil rig and was then struck by a piece of equipment.  Another worker was injured.  He was employed at R.E. Gas Development's Brace West drill pad. 

February 25 - Canaan, PA - 34 year old Eric Williams of Nanticoke, PA was killed on the job when he was stabbed to death by an inmate.  Williams was a guard at the Canaan penitentiary, working for US Bureau of Prisons. 

February 26 - Falls Township, NJ - 50 year old Janio Salinas Zalerda of Edgewater died on the job when he fell from a catwalk, into a sugar hopper while working for the CSC Sugar plant in Bucks County. 

February 27 - Alpharetta, GA - 49 year old Miguel Agirre of Duluth died on the job when he was struck and run over by a backhoe at a construction site.  He was an employee for D & H Construction doing work for Fulton County Water Services.

February 27 - Santa Cruz, CA - Sgt. Loren "Burch" Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed by a suspect who they went to question about an incident.  Both were officers for the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

March 1, 2013 - White Pine, TN - 34 year old Chad Rogers was killed on the job after being struck by a semi while working on a road construction project.  Rogers was working on a TDOT project for Charles Blaylock and Sons when he went to retrieve his hard hat that had blown into traffic.

May 5, 2013 - New York, NY - 60 year old Oluwole Olofin was a taxi driver in December of 1992 when he was shot in the head by a customer who refused to pay his fair.  Olofin died May 5th, a little over 20 years later from complications resulting from the shooting such as post-traumatic seizure disorder.  The medical examiner has declared his death a homicide.

June 18, 2013 - Brooklyn Center, MN - 58 year old Leo Michael Brandt died of blunt force injuries when he was struck and pinned by a postal truck at the loading dock of the Brooklyn Center Post Office.  He was employed by the United States Postal Service.
