The Weekly Toll: Death in the American Workplace

Following is a list of miners who have been killed to date in 2013.  We honor them and their families for the dangerous work they do for us.

Coal Miners

January 26 - Hyden, KY - 52 year old Jerry A. Watts was killed when he was struck on the head by a piece of machinery while working for Watts Welding & Fabricating at T & T Energy's Begley Resources Mine #1.

February 26 - Blount, WV - 34 year old Brandon E. Townsend died after he was struck by a piece of equipment while working for Midland Trail Energy LLC's Five Mile Prep Pit & Refuse Impoundment.

February 7 - Sophia, WV - 43 year old Edward L. Finney was killed when he was crushed under a piece of equipment while working for Affinity Coal Co. LLC's Affinity Mine.

February 12 - Fairview, WV - 51 year old Glen Clutter was killed when he was struck by equipment while working for Consolidated Coal Company's Loveridge #22 Mine.

February 13 - Cutler, IL - 28 year old Timothy K. Chamness died when he was pinned by a piece of machinery while working for Knight Hawk Coal LLC's Prairie Eagle South Underground Mine.

February 19 - Sophia, WV - 44 year old John Myles was killed when he became pinned by a piece of equipment while working for Affinity Coal Company LLC's Affinity Mine.

March 13 - Comfort, WV - 63 year old Asa Fitzpatrick was killed when he was struck by falling rock while working for Newtown Energy Incorporation's Peerless Rachel Mine.

March 22 - Huntington, UT - 29 year old Elam Jones was killed when he was crushed under debris from a roof cave in while working for Castle Valley Mining LLC's C.V. Mine #4.

June 6 - Adger, AL  - 36 year old Christopher Brown died of injuries he received from falling from a catwalk and striking other machinery while working for Jim Walter Resources Inc.'s No. 7 Mine.

July 2 - Eldorado, IL - 35 year old Nathanial Clarida died of injuries after becoming pinned by machinery while working for Peabody Midwest Mining LLC's Wildcat Hills underground mine.

July 31 - Dubois, PA - 28 year old Steelyn G. Kanouff was killed when he was struck by machinery while working for AmeriKohl Mining Incorporation's AmeriKohl Strips.


Metal and Non-Metal Miners

January 7 - Smithland, KY - 49 year old Todd Sumlin was killed when he was struck by falling rock while working for LaFarge West Incorporation's Three Rivers Quarry.

January 21 - Las Vegas, NV - 54 year old Kenneth Korakis died from injuries he received involving machinery while working for Apex Quarry & Plant.

March 27 - Maryland Heights, MO - 61 year old William R. Sievert died when he was struck by debris from a blast while working for Fred Weber Incorporation's North Stone Mine.

April 4 - Yavapai, AZ - 30 year old Alvin H. Thomas died when he was struck by a pipe while working for TIC, The Industrial Co. / Freeport-McMoRan Bagdad Inc.

April 16 - Franklin, LA - 58 year old Michael Charles was killed after being struck by an object while working for North American Salt Company's Cote Blanch Mine.

April 27 - Shamrock, TX - 58 year old James D. Winegeart died after he became entangled in a conveyor while working for Allied Custom Gypsum's ACG #1 Shamrock.

May 17 - Questa, NM - 22 year old Issac A. Garcia died after becoming pinned between a wall and ore car while working for Chevron Mining Incorporation's Questa Mine & Mill.

June 2 - Carlin, NV - 43 year old Corey Vasquez was killed when the loader he was operating go close to an embankment and rolled down it while working for Newmont USA Ltd.'s Exodus Mine.

June 13 - Cupertino, CA - 50 year old Jose A. Gonzales was killed from injuries received in a haul truck crash while working for Stevens Creek Quarry.
