EMT Dies When Ambulance Hit by Another Vehicle

October 10, WEST UNION, IL - 52 year old Richard Poorman died when the ambulance he was in was struck by another vehicle causing both vehicles to overturn in a ditch. Poorman, an EMT who was treating a patient in the back of the ambulance, died at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson. The passenger of the other vehicle was also killed. The ambulance patient was transferred to Deconess Hospital in Evansville for serious injuries.


Farmer Killed in Tractor Rollover

October 9, SALINAS, CA - a 26 year old man has died from an accident involving a tractor. Officials said the accident happened just after 8 p.m. Saturday when the tractor got stuck in an irrigation ditch in in an agricultural field north of Cooper Road west of 183. It then overturned, pinning the driver underneath.


Farmer Killed in Tractor Rollover

October 9, CELINA, OH - 64 year old Eddie Badertscher was killed when his 1965 International farm tractor went off the road. The tractor left the road striking some trees then went into a small creek and overturned. Badertscher was pinned under the tractor when it overturned in the creek. Officials suspect a possible medical condition contributed to the accident.


Two AZ National Park Service Rangers Die in Plane Crash

October 9, PAGE, AZ - 41 year old Laurie Axelsen and 49 year old Brent McGinn died as a result of a plane crash in Southern Utah. Axelsen, who was piloting the plane, was a Law Enforcement Ranger from the Dangling Rope Forest District and passenger Brent McGinn was the Glen Canyon’s Chief Law Enforcement Ranger. The two had been on a scouting trip for an upcoming elk hunt. An investigation into why the plane went down is underway.


Worker Injured in Oil Well Blast in August Dies of Injuries

October 9, ACKERLY, TX - Abel Garcia of Lamesa, has died from his injuries sustained in an oil well explosion on August 19. Garcia sustained burns on up to 80 percent of his body. The second victim of the accident is still hospitalized. Martin County Sheriff John Woodward said at the time that the men, who work for Midland-based Basic Energy Services, were at the well in a support capacity and didn't know gas was filling the air. Woodward says a fireball erupted and burned the two men after the gas was sucked into the engine intake of a vehicle running at the scene near Ackerly.


Man Dies After Jumping From Runaway Truck

October 9, CLEARFIELD, UT - 35 year old Andrew J. Benik was killed instantly when he jumped from the dump truck he was driving because it had lost its brakes. Witnesses following Benik's semi say they saw clouds of black smoke pouring from the truck's brakes before it accelerated past the posted speed limit and veered off the road at 10:40 a.m. Benik may have jumped from the truck when it was going at about 75 mph, said Lt. Perry. The UHP report says Benik was killed instantly when he jumped from the vehicle. He sustained severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.


Vehicle Accident Claims Life of Tribal Police Officer

October 9, EAGLE BUTTE, SD - Merrill Bruguier (BROO'-yuhr) was killed Saturday morning in a one-vehicle accident at the junction of S.D. Highway 63 and U.S. Highway 212. Authorities are still investigating the crash. Bruguier was a tribal police office for the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.


Water Truck Rollover Kills Driver

October 9, SALINAS, CA - an unidentified person was killed Saturday when the tractor he was driving, carrying a 250 gallon tank of water,rolled over, pinning the driver underneath. The driver later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.


Construction Worker Killed by Disgruntled Co-Worker

October 8, NORTHPORT, AL - 50 year old Thomas Duane Banks, a construction worker, was shot about 8:30 a.m. in Centreville at the site of the new Bibb County Schools Board of Education building according to Assistant District Attorney Jim Ransom. One of Banks' former co-workers who was recently fired from the job, was taken into custody at the scene. The coworker has been charged with Banks' murder.


Man Dies in Fall at Construction Site

October 8, SAN MATEO, CA - 23 year old Cristobal Reyes-Segura of Sacramento died as a result of a fall from a construction beam in San Mateo Friday morning while working on the renovation of the Safeway store in the Woodlake Shopping Center, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health said. Reyes-Segura fell about 15 feet from a side of the Safeway store where he was installing an overhang above a drive-thru window, Cal/OSHA spokesman Dean Fryer said.


Bus Driver Dies of Heart Attack

October 7, ATHENS, AL - A bus driver who had a heart attack while driving near Athens has died. The bus, carrying the Western Kentucky University volleyball team to an away game, began veering toward the median and the northbound lanes. Head Coach Travis Hudson gained control of the wheel and brought the bus to a stop. The driver, who was not identified, was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital but later died, according to the Associated Press.


Semi Driver Dies in Train Accident

October 7, KNOX, IN - James Surfus died when the semi he was attempting to drive across railroad tracks was struck by a train. The passenger side of the northbound semi was stuck by a Norfolk Southern Train.


Man Killed by Truck at Rock Quarry

October 7, KANSAS CITY, KS - a man in his 70's has died after being struck by an industrial truck at a rock quarry at Sam Clark Lane and Marxen Road in Kansas City, Kan. Police said the man was struck by a large rock-hauling truck on the floor of the quarry. The incident remains under investigation.


Driver Dies in Semi-Tractor Crash

October 7, RAYMORE, KS - 51 year old Ricky W. Williams died about 12:35 a.m. on I-70 near Warrenton, Mo., in a 2000 International tractor when he ran off the right side of the road, down an embankment and struck a ditch.


CA Firefighter Dies of Heart Attack While Battling Fire

October 7, SACRAMENTO, CA - 52 year old Jim Saunders suffered a heart attack while battling a grass fire over the weekend. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Capt. Christian Pebbles says Saunders—a 22-year veteran of the department—was fighting the fire on Sunday when he suffered the heart attack. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center.


Ambulance Worker Dies After Being Struck by Bus

October 6, CINCINNATI, OH - 40 year old Sherry Pettit, an ambulance worker helping a passenger out of an ambulance, was killed when an unattended metro bus rolled into her. The driver of the bus left her seat and the bus rolled forward, hitting Pettit.


Refinery Worker Killed Working to Repair Toxic Gas Leak

October 6, CHALMETTE, LA - 33 year old Gregory Starkey of Roseland, an employee for Team International Services working at the Exxon Chalmette Refinery, was killed Wednesday night while trying to repair a pipe that was leaking hydrogen sulfide gas, according to the sheriff's office and plant officials. The Louisiana Bucket Brigade, a nonprofit environmental watchdog group, said in a news release that it has reports that the worker had a crack in his respirator.


Shop Employee Killed During Robbery

October 6, PORTSMOUTH, VA - 51 year old Robert V. Nelson was fatally shot during a robbery of the Gold Shop on Portsmouth Blvd. where he was working. The previous day several individuals were seen scoping out the store by walking back and forth several times. Police were called but the persons were not found. They apparently came back the next day and entered the store and killed Mr. Nelson. A surveillance tape of the suspects was captured on another store's camera and an investigation continues.


Illinois Store Owner Murdered

October 6, SOUTHFIELD, IL - 48 year old Mike Khmoro of Farmington Hills was shot and killed outside the Cronin's Liquor Store when he was taking out the trash Wednesday. Robbery does not seem to be a motive and police are investigating. Surveillance video captured the suspect vehicle.


Semi Driver Dies in Fiery Crash

October 6, PLANT CITY, FL - 60 year old Gerry Dale Adams of Lakeland died when his tractor-trailer crashed after midnight today. Adams' nephew told investigators that Adams was following another truck when he radioed to say he was feeling ill and was going to pull over just before he crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames. According to family members, Adams had a history of heart problems.


Man Found Murdered in Orchard

October 6, FRESNO, CA - Police are investigating the death of a man found in an almond orchard near Gustine. Detectives say workers saw the man in the almond orchard earlier in the day and thought he was sleeping. But when he was still there hours later, they approached him and realized he might be dead. One of the workers reported that the man's hands were tied behind his back.


Tree Trimmer Dies After Nine Story Fall

October 6, SPRINGFIELD, OH - 48 year old Anthony Hinzen died Wednesday night from a 9 story fall. Rescue workers said the man had both rope rigging and a safety harness, but they didn't do him any good. One official said, "It appears at this time that he may have cut through the limb that he had his lifeline tied off on. He fell the complete 90 feet with the limb that he actually cut."


Worker Dies After Roof Collapses

October 5, SARASOTA, FL - 57 year old Domingo Sanchez, a worker for Sutter Roofing, was working on the roof of the Fraternal Order of Eagles building when the roof he was working on gave way and he plunged to the ground, according to the roofing company. It is unknown why the roof collapsed under him but the other workers inside the building were not hurt. Sanchez was flown to a medical center in Petersburg where he later died.


Worker Dies Following Fall

October 5, DALLAS, TX - an unidentified worker died today after falling and hitting his head in a storage tank at a water treatment plant on the southeast outskirts of Dallas, rescue officials said. The victim was climbing a ladder out of the tank in the 10000 block of Log Cabin Road about 10 a.m. when he fell 15 feet and struck his head on a concrete block. His name has not been released until family is notified.


Truck Driver Dies When Rig Jackknifed Down Steep Mountain Road

October 5, BLOOMING GROVE, NH - 48 year old John Rule of Richmond died after the trailer of his vehicle jackknifed down a steep hill, causing the truck to hit a tree. Rule was working for a company subcontracted by Verizon to do work on a cell tower on Schunnemunk Mountain. He was driving down Mountain Lodge Road just before Ascension Trail, when his trailer, loaded with a heavy drilling rig, jackknifed.


Bulk Tanker Driver Dies in Crash

October 5, LINCOLN, AL - 48 year old Michael Anthony McGehee of Lincoln was killed when the tanker he was driving flipped over on U.S. 27 just inside the Polk County line. McGehee was traveling north on U.S. 27 when his truck left the highway, traveling 400 feet through brush and evergreens along the highway before finally overturning, scattering ash along the pavement.


Tree Trimmer Electrocuted

October 4, WEST PALM BEACH, FL - 34 year old Pedro Ortiz, the owner of a landscaping business was up in a tree, about 30 feet off the ground, using a hand saw. He was electrocuted when he came into contact with a live power line.


Tree Trimmer Dies From Head Injuries

October 4, MIDDLETON, OH - 38 year old Dudley Akers, a tree trimmer, has died from injuries suffered Monday when he was hit on the head by a large branch. Police say that Akers was hit by the 40-pound branch which fell about 40 feet as he was walking under the tree in the 4500 block of Manchester Road. OSHA has started an investigation.


Semi Truck Crash Kills Driver

October 4, GENESEE, ID - 50 year old Klay M. McGrady of Ritzville, WA died in a tractor-trailer rollover near Genesee on Monday. The ISP states McGrady died when the tanker he was driving failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. The Lewiston Tribune reports the tanker was carrying anhydrous ammonia, but the load remained intact.


Idaho Transportation Worker Dies in Crash

October 4, ASHTON, ID - 55 year old Jonathan Prahasto of Island Park was killed in a car accident along Highway 20. He was employed as a transportation technician for the Island Park maintenance crew. He was on duty at the time. Prahasto was driving in a westbound direction but for unknown reasons he ended up in the opposite direction driving against traffic. His truck was hit by a semi who tried to avoid the crash.


Man Working on Roof Dies From Fall

October 3, YONKERS, NY - 47 year old Hugh Rush of Yorktown died when he fell off the roof of a private home he was working on in Yonkers. His co-worker who was working on the opposite side of the house did not see how or why Rush fell. It does not appear to be a suspicious death.


Teen Found Dead in Farm Field

October 2, PRESHO, SD - 16 year old Reid Lien was found dead in a millet field southwest of Presho. Authorities believe Lien was working on a piece of equipment. They are still investigating.


Worker Killed in Food Plant Accident

October 2, GREEN BAY, WI - 47 year old Gregory Davis was killed over the weekend when a large steel plate fell on him, the Brown County medical examiner's office said Monday. davis was killed about 9 a.m. Saturday at Green Bay Dressed Beef, an American Foods Group facility, 544 Acme St. The incident is under investigation.


Security Guard Killed in Accident

October 1, OAK HARBOR, OH - Pedro M. Alvaraz, a security guard working at Charlie Jones Produce, was killed Friday when he was struck by a forklift carrying a large bin of tomatoes. The driver of the forklift told police that because of dust in the air and the time of day, his vision was partially obscured, and that Alvaraz had come out of nowhere and walked in front of the forklift, the report says.


School Bus Worker Dies in Accident

October 1, NOBLESVILLE, IN - 67 year old Hubert "Buddy" Chadwell of Fishers passed away after an accident at the Transportation Center Friday evening. Noblesville Schools spokeswoman Sharon Trisler said the exact details of the tragic accident are unknown because no one else was in the bus garage at the time of the accident. Chadwell had served the school district as a bus mechanic since 1997. As a mechanic, he was instrumental in ensuring that Noblesville children were transported safely to and from school each day.
