Weekly Toll-Death in the American Workplace

 Killed at Work

April 9, Moss Point, MS - 24 year old Christopher Hebert died due to blood loss while working at Omega Protein Seafood plant.  Circumstances are unclear but reports say he was working on a conveyor belt and seems to have become caught in the machine.   

 Worker Falls Into Machinery

April 12, 2012 - Mt. Pleasant, TN - 44 year old Keith Frierson died while working at Tennessee Aluminum Processors. He was clearing scrap metal and apparently noticed the hopper of a shredder machine clogged.  He someone slipped and fell into the machine.  

Bridge Worker Killed

May 3, Austin, IN - 50 year old Roger Lee Cox was killed while working on the construction of the Milton Madison Bridge. Authorities say it appears Cox was crushed by a piece of equipment.   Cox had been working from a bucket when he was pinned between the bucket and the object he was working on.

Industrial Incident Kills Worker

May 3, Carenco, LA - 33 year old Kevin "Slim" Benjamin died when he was pinned between two pipes that he had been working on.  Benjamin worked for Frank's Casing Crew. 

Man Killed by Falling Equipment

May 3, Amelia, LA - 22 year old Oscar Pharegood of Napoleonville, died after a piece of equipment fell on him while he was working at Allison Marine, authorities said. A crane was lowering a pressure release vessel from a platform to the ground and when Pharegood was releasing the cables, the vessel began to lean, and it fell on him.

Worker Crushed Under Forklift

May 7, Festus, MO - 54 year old Robert N. "Robb" Jett died when a forklift fell off a loading dock and onto him while he was working at Schroeder & Tremayne, Inc.   It is unclear if he was driving the forklift as it fell.

 Boom Truck Operator Killed at Work

May 8, Seward, AK - 52 year old Felix Morales of Lawndale, CA was killed when the boom truck he was operating tipped over, throwing him from the cab and onto a ship's deck below.  Morales was employed by Icicle Seafoods and has been traveling from California to Alaska to work the fishing season for a number of years.

 Tank Explosion Kills Worker

May 9, El Paso, TX - 36 year old Gerardo Morales Gutierrez died after a water tank he was working on exploded.  He was standing on top of the tank, welding, when the explosion occurred.  It is unclear who Gutierrez worked for.

Longshoreman Crushed to Death

May 14, Port Manatee, FL - 48 year old Robert L. Dixon of Tampa, was killed when he was crushed under a 5,000 pound crane basket at Port Manatee.  Dixon was helping to offload a ship when he became pinned under the crane basket.  Dixon was employed by Logistec USA, Inc. 

Tree Trimmer Electrocuted

May 14, Fort Worth, TX - 31 year old Jose Murcia of Arlington was electrocuted when he came into contact with power lines.  He was trimming a tree at a home in Fort Worth when the incident took place.  His work partner called 911. 

Equipment Incident Claims Life

May 15, Tallmadge, ON - 22 year old Andrew Elko of Middlefield was killed in an industrial incident at Dayton Freight Lines.  Authorities have said Elko died of significant injuries related to a tow motor.  No other details are available. 

Worker Crushed Under Building Collapse

May 15, Augusta, ME - 54 year old Robert "Bobbie" Rodriques died of crushing injuries when a building he was working under collapsed onto him.  Rodriques was kneeling under the building attempting to repair a post foundation when some support beams gave way.  His boss was also under the building and barely escaped being crushed. He was employed by Kennebec Home Improvements and the building was at a summer camp on Lovejoy Pond.

Railroad Engineer Dies 


May 18, Upper Merion, PA - 43 year old Jefferson L. "Karma" Troester of Claymont, DE died when a giant roll of newsprint pager fell onto him as he opened the rail car doorway.  He was engineer for Upper Merion & Plymouth Railroad.




Exploding Equipment Kills Worker


May 21, Pascagoula, MS - 39 year old Jeffery Simpson died while working for MS Phosphates, a fertilizer plant. Authorities say it appears a piece of equipment exploded, killing Simpson.  The equipment was in a portion of the plant that was not operational at the time but maintenance was being performed. 


Three Oil Company Workers Die in Blast in Arkansas


 May 21, Norphlet, AR - 24 year old Coley Gene Lee of El Dorado, AR was killed when an oil tank he and two other workers were taking apart exploded.  Authorities believe fumes left inside the tank ignited.  All three men worked for Long Brothers Oil Company. 







May 21, Norphlet, AR - 38 year old Mercil "Shane" Chelette of Louann, AR was also killed in the blast while working to take apart an old oil tank working for Long Brothers Oil Company.







May 21, Norphlet, AR - 24 year old Lee Randall Ross of Smackover, AR was the third worker who died in the oil tank explosion while working for Long Brothers Oil Company.







Father and two Sons Die in Manure Pit Incident

May 24, Kennedyville, MD - 48 year old Glen Nolt, 18 year old Kevin Nolt and 14 year old Cleason Nolt, all of Peach Bottom, PA, were all found dead inside a manure pit on a Kennedyville, MD dairy farm.  Officials say all three died of asphyxiation but that Cleason also died of "multiple injuries".  Investigators say they believe his injuries were caused by a large propeller at the end of the auger that circulates the liquid manure in the pit.  It is not clear how all three came to be in the manure pond/pit.
